Biographical Note

Joseph T. Edwards was born in Flores, Azores in 1856, and began his career in whaling in 1872 aboard the A. R. Tucker (Bark). He came to New Bedford when the vessel returned and he served on numerous whaling vessels from that port. By 1887, he became a master and continued on several vessels until 1908. Upon his retirement from the sea, he became proprietor of the Azorean Emporium, taught classes in navigation and also retained a vested interest in the whaling industry as an agent. He died in 1913.

Scope and Content Note

The majority o0f these papers concern Joseph T. Edwards as the whaling agent for the Cameo (Schooner) for two voyages from 1908-1915. Papers for the Cameo (Schooner) are various types of ship's papers including correspondence, crew papers, consular records, bills of exchange and of lading, and bills and receipts.

There is also a passenger list account for the Vera Cruz (Bark), 1906, a Cape Verdean packet, settled by Antone L. Sylvia of New Bedford, Massachusetts.
