Inventory of the J. B. Wood & Company RecordsIn the New Bedford Whaling Museum Research Library
Historical NoteJ. B. Wood & Company of New Bedford, Massachusetts, was established in about 1842 and engaged in the whaling industry as agents and owners of several vessels. The firm was comprised of James B. Wood (1809-1872) and his brother, Charles L. Wood (1813-1881), both of whom had previously been captains of whaling vessels. They acted as agents for such ships as Arnolda, Lemuel C. Richmond, Metacom, and Oliver Crocker. The firm ceased to function upon the death of James B. Wood in 1872. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteMaterials in this collection reflect the activities of J. B. Wood & Company in the whaling industry at New Bedford, Massachusetts, from 1845-1873. The ship's papers, 1845-1873, consist of crew accounts including settlements of voyage with captain, crew, and owners; sales accounts of oil and bone, and oil stowage plans; consular records; containing protests for damage to vessels; correspondence; and insurance policies. The other series of this collection consists of correspondence, 1845-1847, between the company and a Peter Rogerson regarding treasure buried at the Cocos Islands in the Pacific Ocean and discusses plans for recovering the monies.
