Historical Note

Timothy Hammond was born in 1768 in Rochester, Massachusetts, where he later owned a farm. He married Elizabeth LeBaron of Plymouth, Mass., in 1791 and had twelve children, the most notable of whom were active in the merchant service in New York City, N.Y., and Boston, Mass. Bezaliel Shaw Hammond, Timothy's oldest son, was born in 1797. After sailing in the merchant service he became a trader, first in New York City and later in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he died ca. 1860. LeBaron Hammond, born in 1799, also entered into trading after the merchant service, keeping a grocery store in Brooklyn, N.Y., until his death in 1879. Andrew Craigie Hammond, born in 1808, also sailed from New York and Boston before he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he learned carpentry. Andrew died in 1889. Unlike his brothers, Frederick H. Hammond, Timothy's youngest son born in 1812, went to sea aboard whaling vessels. He died in 1859.

Scope and Content Note

The material in this collection chiefly consists of correspondence between members of the Hammond family during the years 1817-1856. Materials of note include the outgoing correspondence, 1817-1856, of Bezaliel Shaw Hammond, LeBaron Hammond, Timothy Hammond Jr., and Andrew Craigie Hammond chiefly concerning their voyages in merchant vessels sailing from New York City, N.Y., and Boston, Mass. These letters, the majority of which are addressed to their father, also contain family news. The incoming correspondence of Timothy Hammond, 1820, 1831, 1846, includes a letter from Lemuel Shaw, Chief Justice of Massachusetts, concerning the estate of Elizabeth Nancy Shaw Craigie and a letter from his brother-in-law, John LeBaron of Albany, N.Y., concerning his work as a printer. These letters are supplemented by a bill, 1820, and a genealogical note, ca. 1820. In the outgoing correspondence of Samuel W. Hammond, 1835, 1841, is a letter concerning his work as a carpenter in Madison, New Jersey. Other members of the Hammond family represented by outgoing correspondence, ca. 1830-1856, are Ebenezer Rogers Hammond, Elizabeth Rogers Hammond West, Frederick H. Hammond, and Harriet W. Hammond Howes.
