Materials in this collection consist of correspondence to and from Dr. Teller, documents, photographs and other material collected by him while conducting research on the life and voyages of Captain Joshua Slocum (1844-1909).

Biographical Note

Dr. Walter Magnes Teller (1911-1993) was widely recognized as the foremost Slocum scholar of his time. He wrote two books on Joshua Slocum: The Search for Joshua Slocum in 1956 and Joshua Slocum in 1971. He edited The Voyages of Joshua Slocum in 1958, a collection of Slocum's previously published accounts of his voyages. Teller's research on Joshua Slocum extended from 1952 to 1988. He also edited On the River: A Variety of Canoe and Small Boat Voyages.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of correspondence (original, photocopies and typescripts), newspaper and journal clippings, reviews, photographs, royalty statements, drawings, cards and other documents relating to Joshua Slocum, his life and his voyages. His papers include inquiries sent to individuals and organizations requesting information on Slocum and the responses received.

Included are: original letters by Joshua Slocum, photostats and typescripts of letters by Slocum at the Peabody Museum, New York Public library, and the Smithsonian Institution; correspondence with Jonathan Sinaiko, a screenwriter and a copy of a proposed screenplay; correspondence with John Cunningham, TV producer; correspondence re Slocum stamps, the Nova Scotia ferry boat “Joshua Slocum”; correspondence with graphologists including reports on analysis of Slocum's handwriting(1954); and correspondence with publishers of his books including royalty statements.

Researchers should note that books and printed materials have been removed to the Library's printed collection and should search the Online Library Catalog with the phrase "teller" for a complete listing of titles.
