This screening follows our Sailor Series | ALL HANDS ON DECK, A Modern-day High Seas Adventure to the Far Side of the World! lecture, scheduled on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, featuring the story of how The Rose, the replica eighteenth-century warship that the filmmakers had bought for the production, was sailed from Newport, Rhode Island by a "ragtage crew of thirty oddballs and tall-ship fanatics" across two oceans and thousands of miles for the Hollywood film production.
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is a 2003 American epic period war-drama film co-written, produced and directed by Peter Weir, set during the Napoleonic Wars. The film's plot and characters are adapted from three novels in author Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series, which includes 20 completed novels of Jack Aubrey's naval career. The film stars Russell Crowe as Aubrey, captain in the Royal Navy, and Paul Bettany as Dr. Stephen Maturin, the ship's surgeon.
This ticket includes museum admission, for those who wish to come earlier to explore museum galleries.
