Inventory of the David A. Henderson Collection

Biographical Note

David Henderson was born in Greeley, Colorado. He received his BS and MA degrees from University of Colorado in 1946 and 1951 respectively, receiving his PhD in geography from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1963. He taught as San Diego State University, Stanford, University of Arizona, and Colorado State University Northridge as a full professor. He published multiple articles on Mexico and whaling, was the co-author of Six Faces of Mexico, and the author of Journal Aboard the Bark Ocean Bird, and Men and Whales at Scammon’s Lagoon.

After his retirement from academics, Henderson was a scholar in residence at the New Bedford Whaling Museum from 1982 to 1998, when he left New Bedford for an assisted-living facility in New Jersey near the home of his daughter, Andrea Fahnestock, the donor of this collection. At the time of his move to New Jersey, the materials from his study area in the museum were gathered up and boxed, and probably not opened again. Henderson died in New Jersey on June 20, 1999.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains research notes and materials accumulated by David Henderson during his time as scholar in residence at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. The materials of this collection mainly focus on his research as he prepared his book on Baja California Gray Whaling and notes for a book he proposed to write on gray whaling in the Okhotsk Sea, as well as information on twentieth century whaling along the coast of California.

Included in the collection are Henderson’s handwritten notes and rough drafts of his manuscripts. The collection also contains old and somewhat faded silver-based photostats of pertinent sections of whaling logbooks, as well as originals and Xerox copies of published papers relating to his subject interests. In addition, the collection contains incoming and outgoing correspondence during his time at the Museum, and some notes and tables made by Cathryn Brower. Brower took the docent course in the late 1970s and did some work for David compiling data shortly after that time.

This expanded inventory is based on the original inventory of the collection made shortly it arrived in New Bedford by a museum intern as part of the appraisal requested by the donor.
