Historical Note

Stephen Ambrose Morse invented the "Morse Patent Straight-Lip Increase Twist Drill" in 1861 and patented it in 1863. The following year, he found interested investors in New Bedford, and a company was organized and funded with $30,000 in capital stock. The original building was a two story wooden building. Mr. Morse left the company shortly thereafter.

In 1889 the capital stock increased to $600,000 and the buildings covered an area equal to one mile. During its first 25 years the company diversified and made other tools, chucks, reamers, and taps. It is also notable that the original board of directors was unchanged with the exception of the addition of Mr. Edward Taber as treasurer.

Scope and Content Note

The Morse Twist Drill & Machine Company Collection consists of administrative records, financial records, legal papers, patents, employee records, buildings and property, advertising, exhibitions, history, public relations and photographs documenting a New Bedford business during the years 1860-1975.

These papers have been arranged as one collection while maintaining their original provenance as noted on the folders. Many papers were found in their original bundles held together by rubber bands or paper bands. In these cases, the papers were kept as a group and designated as (1 of 2), (2 of 2), etc. The bulk of the papers (1865-1925) represent the early years of the company and the people involved in its early success.

The photographs found in 1990 were removed directly to the photo archives. The photographs found with the 2005 papers have been removed and noted in the separation sheets found with their associated papers in the folders.

Oversize materials have been removed to oversize storage as designated by the separation sheets found in the folders from which they were removed. The oversize bound volumes have been removed to the shelf location.
