Scope and Content Note

Steamships have played a major role in the history of the geographic area of New Bedford, Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. They were instrumental in the economic and social progress of the people who lived there and those who visited these regions. Mr. Woods' interest in steamboats was extensive, focusing on everything from the establishment of the commercial enterprises, to the design and building of the ships, to the social impact they had upon the local environment, and the people who played a part in this history.

The newspapers, printed materials, plans, maps, and copied materials described in this finding aid comprise a larger collection of postcards, photographs taken by his father (Howard M. Wood), books, and a partial whaling logbook Mr. Wood gave to the New Bedford Whaling Museum in 1991. Mr. Wood contributed his knowledge and efforts for an exhibit and lecture on the history of local steamboats at the New Bedford Whaling Museum in 1992.

Each series follows the format used by Mr. Wood for his research including the numerous loose papers and articles found with the collection. There are several collections of materials that do not relate directly to the history of steamships and have been left in their original location.

Description

Please Consult Research Library for Detailed Description of Collection

Series I: Binders, 1816-1961 [2 linear feet]
The ten notebook binders found with the collection contain the research documents and papers relating to Mr. Wood’s interest in the history of the steam ships of Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket as well as his interest in the history and contemporary events of those places. Only a few of the binders had titles, while most did not. They were, therefore, numbered and arranged arbitrarily by the processor. The dividers may be labeled but the materials inserted are, in some cases, unrelated. Several binders contained loose papers and documents that have been put into a folder and identified as part of that particular binder.
Series II: Book Notes, 1850-1988 [6 inches]
The book notes were found in various folders and loose papers. These materials have been put into folders as they were found, either in folders or as groups according to the subject.
Series III: Collected Material, 1873-1980 [2.5 linear feet]
These papers and documents were found as groups in folders and boxes. The processor has endeavored to arrange them under the subject headings used by Mr. Wood. The material that is not related to his research on steamships has been arranged as "Unrelated" or "Personal." Additionally, there is a collection of newspaper articles about his grandfather, Allen F. Wood who was a principal of the Fifth Street Grammar School in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He was proud of the fact that it was the first school in the country to fly the American flag daily over the school in 1861.
Series IV: Index Cards, Undated [9 inches]
The index cards were stored in a document box with the original rubber bands separating the cards into the following groups: alphabetical subject index, cards with dates and place names, cards with numerical headings with dates, cards devoted to individual steamships, and cards with miscellaneous headings.
Series V: Printed Books [2 items]
This series consists of two large format books found with the collection. They have been cataloged and incorporated into the Research Library’s printed collection.
