Inventory of the Haskins Family Business Records

Historical Note

Orville Haskins was born in Middleborough, Massachusetts, in 1815. He moved to New Bedford, Mass., in 1840 and started working as a carpenter. By 1855, he had three assistants, and his firm was called 0. Haskins & Company. From 1857 to about 1866, Orville and his brother, Joseph C. Haskins (b. 1817), were partners in the firm of O. & J. C. Haskins. According to the New Bedford city directories, the company dissolved around 1885, when Orville and his sons, Elmore P. Haskins (1849-1930) and Herbert K. Haskins (1845-1917), formed the firm of O. Haskins & Sons, lasting until Orville's death in 1892. The records in this collection, however, indicate that O. Haskins & Sons only existed until about 1882, when it became known as Haskins Brothers, active until 1894.

Scope and Content Note

Materials in this collection reflect the business activities of members of the Haskins family of New Bedford, Mass., in their associations with each other in the firms of O. Haskins & Company, O. & J. C. Haskins, O. Haskins & Sons, and Haskins Brothers, from 1855-1897. Day books, dating from 1855-1872, include records for O. Haskins & Company and O. & J. C. Haskins. Ledgers, which cover a longer period of time, from 1855-1897, encompass all four Haskins family associations and contain entries for work done on specific houses throughout the New Bedford area.

The final series in this collection contains letters to Herbert K. Haskins from his friend, Philip M. Crapo, who serving in the Union Army in North Carolina from 1862-1863. These letters describe his life in camp as well as some skirmishes in which his company engaged.
