Historical Note

Samuel P. Burt, Gardner T. Sanford, and Charles Sampson Kelley formed the private banking firm of S. P. Burt & Company in New Bedford, Massachusetts on April 22, 1875. Upon Burt's death in 1884, the firm was reorganized as Sanford & Kelley, who sold stock for most of the major textile mills in the area, including Wamsutta Mills and the New Bedford Rayon Company, making them one of the leading banking and brokerage houses in the city of New Bedford. Charles Sampson Kelley (1846-1937), the more prominent of the two partners, was active in civic affairs in New Bedford, serving on the Board of Trade, the Protecting Society, and the Veteran Firemen's Association. He was also active in business, being instrumental in the organization and later reorganization of the New Bedford Cordage Company. His son, Charles Sampson Kelley Jr. (1879-1959), was also involved in civic activities and worked in the offices of Sanford & Kelley with his father, as did his son, Charles Sampson Kelley III (1912-2004). In 1938 or 1939, the firm merged into Tucker, Anthony & Co., which later became Tucker, Anthony and R. L. Day. The Kelleys continued to use the S. & K. ledgers for recording transactions with their clients.
