Inventory of the Llewellyn Howland PapersIn the New Bedford Whaling Museum Research Library
Biographical NoteLlewellyn Howland was born in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, in 1877. After receiving his education at Friends Academy, Milton Academy and Harvard University, he entered the building materials and oil businesses in Boston, Mass., and remained active as a business executive until about 1940, when he returned to South Dartmouth and began his second career as a writer. Howland's stories and sketches, published both in magazines and as books, chiefly consist of reminiscences of his childhood in the South Dartmouth area and often reflect his interest in sailing. He continued writing his nostalgic tales until shortly before his death in 1957. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteThe bulk of this collection consists of holograph, typescript, galley and printed copies of stories and sketches written by Llewellyn Howland between 1940-1955. Included are some of his most popular works printed in the Atlantic Monthly, including “Clambake,” 1940-1941; “Creamy Eyes,” 1942; “Holly Days,” 1942; and “Thumblings,” 1942-1943. These stories and others were collected and published as a book entitled Sou'West and By West of Cape Cod by Harvard University in 1947 which is also included in this collection. These documents are supplemented by business and personal correspondence, 1939-1955, which includes letters to and from Edward Weeks, editor of the Atlantic Monthly, as well as the editors of Yachting, Rudder, and American Neptune magazines. In addition, Howland's correspondence contains letters concerning copyrights and epistles from admiring readers. Other materials in this collection include copyright agreements, 1941-1944, and lists, miscellaneous research material, critiques, clippings and related items, principally concerning Howland's writings, ca. 1942-1953. Materials in this collection are arranged into series by type of document. Correspondence is arranged chronologically by year, then alphabetically arranged by name of the writer. Howland's short stories are arranged alphabetically by title and include annotated manuscripts, photographs used to illustrate the stories, critiques and research material.
