December discoveries: school vacation week
December 26 - 31, 2024 | General Admission
This December School Vacation Week dive into a week of exploration and discovery across five exciting temporary exhibitions. Whether you're exploring environmental activism, uncovering the history of local women, or delving into art and history, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
Community BLOOMS: Katy Rodden Walker: Experience this immersive art and science installation focused on raising awareness about plastic pollution and jellyfish blooms. Join in the conversation about environmental change and activism as you reflect on the beauty and fragility of our oceans.
Lighting the Way: SouthCoast Women’s Lives, Labors, Loves: Celebrate the significant contributions of women from the region, with a focus on objects made by and for women throughout history. From portraits to textiles and objects, this exhibition highlights women’s roles in shaping the region’s cultural, civic, and political life.
Up From the Depths: Natural Selections from our Collections: Discover an extraordinary collection of natural artifacts—bones, shells, anatomical illustrations, and more—curated to showcase the beauty of the natural world and how these objects have been reimagined throughout history.
Complicated Legacies: Museum History, White Supremacy, and Sculpture: Engage in critical conversations about the legacies of problematic historical figures through this exhibition. Featuring the return of a controversial bust by John Gutzon Borglum, it invites visitors to reflect on art, history, and social justice.
Entangled in the Lines: Figuring Moby-Dick: Explore the world of Moby-Dick through a collection of artwork that illustrates how the novel’s expansive themes have been interpreted by artists. Featuring selections from the Elizabeth Schultz collection, the exhibition showcases creative depictions of Melville’s iconic characters.
Join us this December to engage with thought-provoking exhibitions and discover new perspectives on history, art, and activism at the New Bedford Whaling Museum!
