Local History Guild | Documentary Photographs - New Bedford Whaling Museum
A sepia-toned historical photograph of people walking along a fence, overlaid on a modern-day photograph of the same location. The original 1912 image by Lewis W. Hine depicts Belleville Road and Nashawena Mills in New Bedford, discovered by Carl Simmons. The overlay highlights the contrast between past and present architecture.

LOCAL HISTORY GUILD | DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHS

Tuesday, September 10 at 5:30 PM on Zoom

Join us for an exciting Local History Guild conversation with New Bedford artist Carl Simmons and photography historian Jesse Dritz. Simmons will discuss how he composes New Bedford views, juxtaposing historic photographs by Lewis Hine with views from today. Jesse Dritz will help frame the conversation by discussing the historical background of documentary photography. The discussion will be moderated by Marina Dawn Wells, Assistant Curator of History & Culture.

Carl Simmons is a New Bedford artist who finds inspiration in the ways we forget and remember local history, our preference for folklore and mythology over facts, and the contradictory conundrums of preservation.

Jesse Dritz is a PhD candidate studying the history of photography in the American studies program at Boston University. She has held positions at institutions including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the American Antiquarian Society, and Aperture Foundation. Jesse’s writing on photography appeared in 10x10 Photobooks’ recent catalogue What They Saw: Historical Photobooks by Women, which was named ‘catalogue of the year’ at the 2021 Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards. Her dissertation considers grassroots student photo publications in the 1970s as alternative practices which reimagined the possibilities and uses of documentary photography.
